So last week when we were teaching our retreat group in Ubud here in Bali we arranged a special treat for our yogis. A visit from a very inspiring teacher (and well known in the yoga world) who just happened to be teaching in Ubud at the same time as us. We invited him to share his wisdom and to lead us through our afternoon practice.
The legend that is Mark Whitwell from ‘The Heart of Yoga’ rocked up to our Shala at Ananda Cottages on his motorbike looking cool! He would probably hate for me to call him a legend as he aspires to being a very unassuming ordinary man simply on a mission to inspire others to practice yoga.
Mark studied for two decades with T. Krishnamacharya, often referred to as the “father of modern Yoga” and teacher to B.K.S. Iyengar, B.N.S. Iyengar, Indra Devi and others.
We chatted about life in general and Mark reminded us that we are all already perfect, no matter how advanced our yoga practice or who we are (or think we are) or where we come from. There is a yoga practice that is appropriate for every person, regardless of age, health, body type or culture.
After a question and answer session, he then lead us all through a very basic breath inspired practice. He reminded us that Asana practice is the body moving with the breath, the inhale merging with the exhale, the strength in receiving and the strength of giving. Breath is simply all there is, the overriding principle of all yoga is to stay with the breath, as it provides the method for the practitioner to realize his or her highest potential.
We are so grateful to Mark for taking the time to share his teachings with us, after he left, the whole group were all so uplifted.
Yogis, watch this space, next year we are planning on hosting Mark here in the UK! 😊
Love from Bali 🌴☀️👌🏽
